Fr Bwalya announced his resignation in a statement yesterday in Kitwe.
“I have served MISA Zambia for a number of years with undoubted commitment, sacrifice and integrity.
However, I regret to observe that the association has allowed selfish individuals to turn it into a battle field of conflicting interests, political and personal aggrandisement.
“The sad reality is that individuals who do not believe in the values and principles of the association have usually counted on the advantage of numbers to derail MISA Zambia away from its noble agenda in our country,” he said.
Fr Bwalya accused some members of MISA of only allowing their own kind to participate in the affairs of the association.
He said Catholic institutions had been members of MISA Zambia for many years and that they had always added value to the association.
Fr Bwalya said it was sad to note that anti-Catholic sentiments had allegedly been used to silence “our independent voice” on critical issues affecting the association and the governance of the country.
“Since I cannot belong to the MISA regional family without going through my local chapter, I have also decided to terminate my membership with the association with immediate effect.
I wish to announce that all members from Radio Icengelo who participated in the extra-ordinary general meeting have approved my position and will be announcing their resignation on their own,” Fr Bwalya said.
He claimed that other Catholic institutions were equally aggrieved about the developments in MISA, that led to his resignation.
“I know that some people will claim that I have chosen to resign only because the members have decided to participate in the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) contrary to my wishes.
They are right, but not entirely.
One thing should be understood that when I said MISA Zambia was not going to participate in the NCC and that the NCC Act was a bad law, I was simply confirming a decision that was made by over 300 members at a popular annual general meeting (AGM) in 2003,” he said.
Fr Bwalya stressed that as far as he was concerned, the NCC was just one step in the Constitutional Review Process.
