Kitwe council demolishes illegal structures

THE Kitwe City Council on Wednesday demolished several illegal makeshift stores at Bulangililo market and those along Kazembe Road in Kwacha Township.
Zambia National Marketeers Association (ZANAMA) Kitwe district chairman, Enock Chipili, said yesterday that council police officers swung into action around 02:00 hours and demolished more than 100 makeshift stores.
However, Mr Chipili said it was unfair for the council to demolish the structures which were the only source of income for the local people.
He said more than 200 marketeers were affected by the council’s action.
“People have lost property like pots, phones, shoes hardwares and groceries.
The value of the items is more than K70 million.
The question is, where will the people go now? The council should have found an alternative place for people to trade before demolishing the structures,” Mr Chipili said.
He said several residents looted the items that were in different makeshift stores.
But some people talked to at Bulangililo market commended the council for demolishing the illegal structures.
They said there were a number of illegal activities that were taking place in the makeshift stores, some of which were being used as brothels.
Council spokesperson, Francis Wasamunu, declined to comment as he was on annual leave.
