Police in Kitwe said the gang allegedly murdered two people in Mufulira during the festive period and that they have staged high profile criminal activities in the province.
Police spokesperson Bonny Kapeso could neither confirm nor deny the development and referred all queries to Copperbelt police commanding officer Antonneil Mutentwa, who could not be reached.
A police source said, however, that the four officers were arrested yesterday in Mufulira when they attempted to stage a robbery at a house belonging to a businessman.
The suspects later implicated more police officers who were interrogated.
“We ended up locking up more than five officers after they were implicated, but after investigations, it was revealed that they were innocent and have since been released.
“The suspects were just pointing at any police officer they saw and that is why we ended up detaining more officers,” the source said.
The source said it is believed that the suspects were using Zambia Police firearms to stage robberies.
A check by a Daily Mail crew found police officers at the police headquarters keeping vigil.
The suspects were later bundled into a police van as scores of Kitwe residents hurled insults at the handcuffed officers.
It was not immediately known where they were taken.
