A MAN has told a local court that his wife stopped making love to him because she contended that he was no longer virile and that having sex with him caused her stomach pains.
Chaswa Mwewa, 53, of Chimwemwe Township told the Buchi local court in Kitwe that to the contrary, he was still potent and even has two children outside wedlock.
He also said that the two children he has outside marriage have not caused any tension in his marriage.
Mwewa said this in a case in which his wife, Joyce Mwewa, sued him for divorce. The couple has been married for 33 years and they have three children together.
He told senior presiding magistrate Godwin Lundu, who was sitting with senior presiding magistrate Maketo Likumba, that he married Joyce in 1978 through customary marriage when she was 14 years old.
Mwewa said their relationship started to crack in 2007 when Joyce went into a business of selling cassava.
He said she started receiving phone calls at night and she ensured that he did not listen in to the conversations.
He said this caused him to suspect that Joyce was having an illicit love affair with another man.
“In 2008 she started refusing to make love with me, claiming that I cause her stomach pains. I decided that we stop making love to avoid her being in pain,” he said.
Mwewa said that to ensure that he made no attempt to make love with her, Joyce started sleeping in her clothes and that her secretive phone calls continued.
“On one occasion last year, around 02:20 hours, she received a phone call and she left the bedroom to go and answer the call in the kitchen. This angered me and I slapped her. When I asked her who phoned she told me that it was her pastor. After this incident she went away from the matrimonial house for three months and I did not know her whereabouts,” Mwewa said.
He said his and her family representatives have held meetings to try to resolve the matrimonial friction but Joyce still refuses to make love to him.
“Now she has sued me for divorce. I don’t want to divorce her because I have lived with her for 33 years. I married her when she was 14 years old and her family is not supportive. Looking at her age (47) no-one can keep her,” he said.
In her statement, Joyce said she has had no sexual relationship with Mwewa for six years because he claims to be too old to make love.
Joyce told the court that Mwewa told her that she was free to do whatever she wanted.
She said the two children that Mwewa has outside marriage have contributed to some of the problems in their marriage.
In cross-examination, Joyce said she refused to have sex with Mwewa because he could not make her feel like a woman.
“I sleep in my clothes because we don’t make love. He is impotent and I had the right to sue for divorce,” Joyce told the court.
She also denied receiving phone calls in the night.
The case was adjourned for judgement.
