Married man denies deflowering, admits impregnating teenager

By ALEX NJOVU

A MARRIED man has told a local court that he may have impregnated a teenage grade 11 pupil but insisted that he was not responsible for deflowering her.
Joseph Chileshi, 28, told the Kitwe Buchi local court that he made love once with the 17-year-old Chimwemwe A High School pupil and so he could be responsible for her pregnancy but that he doubted being the first man to have had sex with her.
Chileshi said this in a case in which the girl’s mother sued him for deflowering and impregnating the girl.
Chileshi said he admitted impregnating the girl just to keep peace with her and her family but that he will demand a DNA test to ascertain paternity when the child is born.
“I just slept with her once. In fact before sleeping with her she told me that she could get pregnant and after one week she told me that I had impregnated her.

I doubt very much if I am the one responsible for the pregnancy. I will demand that a DNA test is done when the baby is born but for now I am responsible for the pregnancy,” he said.

Chileshi said that he slept with the teenager in November last year and that it is shocking to learn that the girl is now five months pregnant.
In her statement, the teenanger's mother told the court that she decided to sue Chileshi after he denied being responsible for the girl’s pregnancy.
The teenager's mother said that her daughter named Chileshi as the man who impregnated her.
“We called Chileshi for a meeting after my daughter mentioned him as the man responsible for the pregnancy but he denied being responsible and that is why we sued him for deflowering my daughter and for damage,” she said.
Senior presiding magistrate Enoch Chungu, sitting with senior magistrate Justin Chalwe, found Chileshi guilty and ordered that he pays Chanda K3 million as compensation.
The compensation is to be paid in monthly installments of K150,000 with effect from February.
