Felix Chungu told Kitwe’s Buchi number two local court senior presiding magistrate Godwin Lundu, who was sitting with senior presiding magistrate Maketo Likumba, that he does not want his marriage to end.
This was in case in which Anne Mwape, 40, of Kawama Township sued Chungu of the same township for divorce due to his unwarranted insults in public.
Chungu, an office orderly at Buntungwa Basic School in Kitwe, said he is ready to stop excessive beer drinking and insulting his wife so that he saves his embattled marriage.
In her statement, Mwape maintained that she wanted to divorce Chungu because he does not have respect for her.
Mwape said Chungu drinks beer with such a passion that it is impossible to stop him from the habit.
She pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage also because Chungu uses his salary on himself and that he says that he is not the father of their third child.
“When we had our third born child he denied responsibility and he has continued denying the child, who is now five years old. I just want divorce,” Mwape said.
“I want divorce because my husband does not respect me. He insults me daily and in public. When I run to my neighbours, he follows me and continues to insult me and the neighbours. I have lost dignity as a woman,” she said.
The court rejected the plea for divorce to give Chungu chance to reform and for the sake of the couple’s three children.
