Women applaud Sata over pardoned mother

By ALEX NJOVU in Kitwe
THE Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) on the Copperbelt has hailed President Sata for releasing 59 female prisoners countrywide as part of this year’s New Year’s celebrations.
YWCA acting Copperbelt co-ordinator Marietta Hamukale said yesterday in Kitwe that President Sata’s gesture has excited the women’s movement in the country.
“We would like to thank President Sata for releasing the female prisoners with babies. We’re happy because the move will go a long way in bettering the future of the children who were being affected by being in prison with their mothers,” she said.
Ms Hamukale said YWCA is happy that Government has continued working towards promoting the rights of women in society.
She called on members of society to accept the women and their children.
Ms Hamukale said society has a special role to play in ensuring the released inmates integrate well in communities without problems.
“We are pleading with members of the community not to reject the 59 women who have been released from prison. We know they may face problems of stigma but we want to caution members of the public and remind them that all of us are potential prisoners. There is, therefore, no need to look down upon those who are in prison or those who have just come out of prison,” Ms Hamukale said.
She said the freed inmates have potential to contribute positively to the development of communities once they are supported by various stakeholders.
Ms Hamukale said it is sad that some members of the public have a tendency of rejecting former inmates.
“We must show love and care to every person in society. We must thank God that President Sata has pardoned the 59 women who had children in prison. Those children never deserved to be in such places in the first place. We should, therefore, not demonise anyone because we don’t know how tomorrow will be for ourselves,” she said.
Ms Hamukale urged Government to continue implementing policies which are aimed at promoting the rights of women and children in society.
She said women are key partners in the development of communities.
President Sata pardoned expecting women, aged and those who have children.
