“We are appealing to all Zambians regardless of political affiliation
to support Ms Masebo and government in general in developing the
tourism sector. We would like to thank Ms Masebo for her courage,
tenacity and commitment to developing the tourism sector and to deal
.with corruption in the tourism industry.
“The minister has managed to expose shocking corrupt activities at ZAWA and she is all over the country checking how tourism is managed, which is very good,” Mr Njovu said.
He said the tourism sector can contribute positively to the development of the country if well managed.
Mr Njovu cited Mauritius as one of the countries in Africa which has invested heavily in tourism and that its economy is performing well.
He said the tourism sector is the answer to the high unemployment levels in Zambia. “About 30 years ago, the economy of Mauritius was dependent on the sugar and textiles industry, but as world sugar prices started declining, the government there decided to expand the tourism industry.
“For some time now, Mauritius has been marketing itself as a predominantly holiday destination and earning huge income from tourism,” Mr Njovu said.
He called for concerted efforts in the development of sectors like tourism which are key to economic growth.
