Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has commended the Chinese
government for its commitment to reducing poverty in Zambia.
China has given Zambia a grant and an
interest- free loan both worth over K80 billion (KR80 million) to enable
the country to finance poverty reduction programmes.
The grant is worth K16 billion (KR16 million) while the interest -free loan is about K65.5 billion (KR 65.5 million)
ZCTU Kitwe district chairman David Mwamba said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that China should be commended for partnering with Government to reduce high poverty levels in the country.
Mr Mwamba also said the labour movement is happy that Government has continued to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country.
“We would like to thank China for giving Zambia K80 billion to enable us finance poverty reduction projects. China has continued to be our friend as a country, China is involved in a lot of development activities in Zambia which are helping in reducing poverty and high unemployment levels in communities,” Mr Mwamba said.
He also said ZCTU is happy that Government is working with various stakeholders in reducing the high unemployment and poverty levels in the country.
Mr Mwamba called for accountability and transparency in the manner the money will be utilised.
He said the money should be used for its intended purpose and that Zambians in rural areas should also benefit from the funds.
“We are appealing to Government to ensure that the loan which we have been given by China should be used for its intended purpose. There should be transparency and accountability in the manner the funds will be used. The poverty levels are high in rural areas we, therefore, need to implement projects which will benefit our people in rural areas,” Mr Mwamba said.
He urged Government to continue implementing viable projects to improve the welfare of Zambians.
