KCC to upgrade Kitwe’s Chipata township

 From ALEX NJOVU in Kitwe
THE Kitwe City Council (KCC) will soon upgrade Chipata township into a formal settlement, but some residents are resisting the programme.
Patriotic Front (PF) Riverside ward councillor Christopher Kang’ombe said the local authority has started making access roads into the township.
“We are going to transform the township into a formal settlement according to a council resolution of 2010,” Mr Kang’ombe said in an interview yesterday.
Mr Kang’ombe is, however, disappointed that some people are resisting plans by the council to upgrade the township.
“Some people are resisting the whole idea but we have no choice but to do it because it is necessary for both parties. We are committed to bringing development to our people and this is what we are doing,” he said.
Mr Kango’mbe urged residents to cooperate with the local authority in its efforts to develop the township.
“What people must not forget is that we are going to take water and other basic needs into the area. Some people may have to be relocated when we come to that phase and they just have to understand us,” Mr Kang’ombe said.
He said the government is in a hurry to develop the country and that it will not be detracted from delivering on its promises.
Mr Kang’ombe said the government is working with various stakeholders in implementing viable projects that benefit people at the grassroots.
“We are focused on eradicating poverty and we will continue implementing developmental projects which are targeted at improving the lives of our people,” Mr Kang’ombe said.
