REAL Life Matters Zambia (RLMZ), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which looks into the plight of vulnerable people in communities, has called on society to stop looking at the aged as wizards but as sources of wisdom whom young people require to achieve their goals in life.
RLMZ national co-ordinator Tina Banda called on communities to treat the aged with respect and care.
Ms Banda said this on Saturday in Kitwe when RLMZ members donated blankets, second-hand clothes and shoes worth about K30 million to over 130 aged people in Zamtan township.
“We would like to appeal to communities, especially young people, to stop looking at the aged as witches. Our elderly people in society must be treated with respect which they deserve because they are reservoir of wisdom,” Ms Banda said.
She assured the aged in Zamtan township that her organisation will continue supporting them with income-generating projects.
Ms Banda said it is important that communities work together to eradicate challenges facing the less-privileged in society.
“Real Life Matters Zambia is an organisation that started as a Facebook forum. It’s activities started in March 2010. As is the case with many social networks, the membership quickly grew faster and the number of problems presented by members became too many, we are now by the grace of God able to give to others,” Ms Banda said.
She said her organisation is focused on becoming a global team that aims at improving lives of underprivileged and vulnerable people in society.
“We are committed to empowering men and women by building capacities, imparting skills, restoring human self-esteem among the vulnerable and underprivileged that may be in need of training, counselling, rehabilitation and caring services,” Ms Banda said.
And Kitwe inter-domination prayer group chairperson Tamara Muyembe commended RLMZ for identifying itself with the poor in communities.
Ms Muyembe said the aged need a lot of care and love from the young generation.
“We would like to thank RLMZ members worldwide for the commitment to fighting poverty in communities, we can only ask God to continue watching over your lives,” Ms Muyembe said.
And RLMZ executive committee member Andyford Banda said his organisation will continue working with various stakeholders including Government in reducing poverty in communities.
Mr Banda said Government alone is not able to meet various challenges facing Zambians, hence the need for organisations such as RLMZ to continue working towards uplifting the living standards of the people.
