UNITED States (US) ambassador Mark Storella says American investors are interested in investing in Zambia and will soon be coming to explore investment opportunities.
Mr Storella said Zambia has a conducive investment environment and that is why it has continued to attract foreign investors.
He said in Kitwe yesterday when he toured the Freedom Park shopping mall construction site that Zambia’s future is bright.
Mr Storella said the construction of the US$ 30 million Freedom Park shopping mall will play a significant role in the development of the Copperbelt and surrounding areas.
Mr Storella said it is encouraging that several jobs have been created during the construction of the shopping mall.
He is confident that the construction of the Freedom Park mall will add value to the Copperbelt Province.
“The construction of the shopping mall at Kitwe’s Freedom Park is a good development which will positively contribute to the development of this area.
“This investment of US$ 30 million has already created jobs for the local people. It is encouraging that 5,000 jobs will be created once the mall is completed, this is very good,” Mr Storella said.
He said the shopping mall will be one of the biggest outside Lusaka and will create many job opportunities for the local
people.
And Freedom Park shopping mall principal consultant Frank Chileshe said about 70 percent of the construction works have been done and that all the external earth works will be completed before the rainy season.
“The construction of the shopping mall is progressing well. About 70 percent of the works have been done and by Easter in April next year, the project will be done,” he said.
Mr Chileshe thanked Mr Storella for touring the project.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Nevelyn Willombe has commended the US government for its continued contribution to the development of the country.
Professor Willombe said the US government has continued to help Zambia in various sectors of the economy.
Prof. Willombe was speaking in Kitwe yesterday during the launch of the American corner at the Dag Hammarskjold Institute for Peace Studies at the Copperbelt University (CBU).
“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the American people and government on the contribution they continue to make to the people of Zambia and government. Your country has assisted and continues to assist our country Zambia in such diverse fields as health, education, infrastructure and sending peace corps in various fields,” Prof Willombe said.
He said the establishment of an American corner at CBU reaffirms the US government’s commitment to helping to develop the country.
Prof Willombe said the facility will be utilised to the benefit of intended beneficiaries.
He said government, through the National Heritage Conservation Commission, has made land available for the construction of an institute at the Dag Hammarskjold memorial crash site in Ndola.
“Let me declare that this process of establishing American centres will continue so that we have as many corners as I have seen in Nigeria, for example, which has nine American corners and our neighbouring country, Malawi, which has more than three corners,” Prof Willombe said.
