CB police warn shebeen queens

By ALEX NJOVU
COPPERBELT commissioner of police Mary Tembo has directed the police command in Mufulira to arrest individuals running shebeens in Kankoyo.
On Tuesday Patriotic Front (PF) Mpelembe ward councillor Chilufya Chomba expressed concern about the mushrooming of illicit drinking places in Kankoyo ,which are allegedly hosting school children and allowing them to watch pornographic movies with adult patrons.
Ms Tembo said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that police will soon conduct an operation to deal with the owners of the shebeens.
“Today (yesterday) I am holding a meeting with district police commanding officers in Ndola and I will bring the matter up. We are going to arrest the people for running these illegal bars and flouting the law by not paying revenue to Government,” Ms Tembo said.
She assured Mufulira residents that police will soon arrest individuals allowing school children to watch pornographic movies and urged the police to work with the municipality to urgently resolve the problem of shebeens.
“It is sad that the people who are running illegal bars are even showing pornographic movies to young patrons who are supposed to be their children. They are allowing school children to take beer, instead of rebuking them and advising them to go to school.
Our friendly advice is that they should find something better to do with their lives instead of engaging in illegal activities otherwise, we will not rest until they are arrested,” Ms Tembo said.
She also called on youths to desist from engaging in activities that can ruin their lives and thanked councillors and Copperbelt residents for supporting the police to fight crime.
